Big rain a-comin’

Thursday, April 7th, 2016
Hairy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 April 2016.

Hairy Woodpecker.

Arose early to find that last night’s inch or so of snow had been washed away by an overnight rain. Still raining, too—lightly. Took Jack out, got busy at my desk. The rain soon passed, but it stayed cloudy. Worked through lunch, then glanced out the window to see what looked like the kind of concentric circles raindrops might make in that wide section of brook down there and figured I might should check the weather radar.

Wild wind, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 April 2016.

Wild wind.

Whoa! Big rain a-comin’. Within five minutes, dog and I were out the door.

I was surprised to see another vehicle in the lot at Beech Hill Preserve. The wind were extremely high. It battered and buffeted us. Met another guy and his little dog coming down. (He, too, was surprised to meet somebody else up there in those conditions.) I could see what looked like rain approaching from the southwest, but we managed to make it up and down in close to record time. Didn’t get wet.

Listed four bird species and saw only one—a Hairy Woodpecker poking around back down near the parking lot.

Later, the big rain did arrive. Wind stayed high well into the evening. Power outages all over the State of Maine.

Not here, though.

Blue rain

Monday, November 17th, 2014
Spruce, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 17 November 2014.

Spruce.

Today was a blue and rainy day. No metaphor. Literally.

Oh, it started a little frosty, with “ice pellets” coming down amid a wet flake or two. Crows populated the bare crown of a big tree in Rockland at midday, as light rain descended from a dim blue sky. Mists and fog rose and hung and lingered. It was a busy day for me—didn’t make it up the hill with dog until late in it.

Saw two bird species: a lot of robins and one sparrow.

Got pretty wet. Didn’t mind.

Nearly perfect day

Friday, July 11th, 2014
Mourning Cloak, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 July 2014.

Mourning Cloak.

The weather was glorious—not to hot, not too cold. There was a breeze, but just enough to carry the extra heat of the sun away during a brisk hike. There were birds in the sky, and I could see them winging. And I could hear them singing. Or, in the case of the Blue Jays, hollering at each other. I even saw a raven flying low between some distant trees, and he was southwest of me, and it was afternoon, so I got a great look at the sheen of the light reflecting from its feathers.

Twelve-spotted Skimmer (female).

If not for a few minor annoyances to keep me grounded—how boring life would be without annoyances—and the fact that I got no great bird photos, this might’ve been a perfect kind of day.
