Summer Shade

Thursday, June 22nd, 2017
Eastern Phoebe, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 June 2017.

Eastern Phoebe.

A glorious, lusty summer solstice, full of wind and scents and drama. A deer nearly ran across the road in front of Jack and me on our way to Beech Hill this morning, but veered away just as I began to jam on my brakes. The wind blew like crazy again, whipping the wings of near butterflies and the sails of far schooners. Clouds blew over, casting moving shade.

In the wind and shade, the world felt air-conditioned. In sunshine, warm as summer should be.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
