Tiny snake.

Took a quick hike with Jack this morning—up and down in 45 minutes—so I could return to help lead a field trip of enthusiastic middle schoolers studying symbiosis. We saw interesting birds (including a young herring gull eating blueberries, a thing I’d never encountered), studied various insects, and  found a tiny snake. It was a fun time.

I also got a look at one happy Cedar Waxwing—perched in a cloud of newly hatched flies, just pickin’ ’em up one by one—and spied a high-flying Red-shouldered Hawk emitting its distinctive (if faraway) cry.

First Dusting

Monday, December 5th, 2016
December landscape, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 December 2016.

December landscape.

No snow when we hit the hill,
dog and I, but soon enough it came.
Ravens came, too—
I heard them first, then saw them
playing up near the summit

as the first flakes fell.
But my camera failed me,
and I missed a great shot,
cursed, but somehow got a photo
of a raven flying upside-down.

At the summit, I heard another
raven croak,
and dashing up the trail with Jack,
twisted my ankle such that
I limped the rest of the way.

On the now snow-covered
steep slope
I slipped and went down, uninjured—
well, other than my ankle.
I love this day anyway.
