Big Wind

American Robin on a windy morn, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 March 2023.
American Robin on a windy morn.

Sure enough, it was a snowshoe hike today for me (with dog following). Sure enough we had a bunch of snow—maybe eight to 12 inches, depending. And sure enough, the winds were extremely high—20mph or so. (Power went out last night for about three hours, but all was well today.)

We were the first on most of the trails today, despite getting a late start (on account of I was shoveling the drive). Coming up the main Beech Hill trailhead, we soon encountered a tree across the trail. And in various other places along, our progress was blocked by snow bound branches drooping over the trail. Took a while, maybe the longest hike since our return. And we both used a lot of energy.

But despite the wind, I listed a few birds—even got a photo of a robin. Hiked 10,220 steps (so my phone says) and burned a lot of calories.

Tomorrow will have sun and half the wind.

Before the Storm

Tuesday, March 14th, 2023
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Perserve, Rockport, Maine, 14 March 2023.
Red-breasted Nuthatch.

We were supposed to get a nice-sized winter storm today, so dog and I headed up the hill a bit early. Windy, as expected, and overcast, but no precipitation for our entire hike. Soon after our return, though a few drips and flakes began to sputter down.

Not until later in the afternoon did things really get interesting, and just no as I write this (after dark), the power has gone out in the neighborhood. But I’ve got enough juice to finish this post, I think.

Had few birds, as you might expect, and no decent photos at all until we’d just about got back to the truck, when a pair of nuthatches posed for pics.

Tomorrow’s gonna be a snowshoe day.

Spring’s a-Comin’

Monday, March 13th, 2023
Northern Harrier, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2023.
Northern Harrier.

A storm’s a-comin’ tomorrow. A nor’easter. We’ll get eight or ten or twelve inches of snow, so they stay. But this morning was calm, cool, overcast, and chock full of birds.

Right away you could tell the birds were thinking “spring.” Singing cardinals, chickadees, titmice. Drumming woodpeckers. Flocks of geese flying north, and a first-of-year marsh hawk. This coming snow might be one of the last of the year before things begin greening up.

We shall see.
