Two Hikes

Monday, January 14th, 2019

Another bright, nippy morning, but without a lot of wind. Had only two species on the hill first thing—but one showed up in a flock. Spent a good while getting cold fingers while photographing Common Redpolls.

About midday, I couldn’t resist taking a quick trip to the breakwater, knowing it was low(ish) tide and hoping for Purple Sandpipers. No sandpipers, but a bunch of typical winter birds—along with the half-dozen American wigeons that’ve been hanging out there for at least three weeks or so.

A bit sore tonight; still, two hikes are better than one.

Stalking the Downy Woodpecker

Downy Woodpecker (male), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 January 2019.

Downy Woodpecker (male).

Chilly and breezy on the hill this bright morning. Got glimpses of a number of interesting species—but the most memorable episode involved following the faint tapping (as of someone gently rapping) of a woodpecker in the woods. Finally found—and got a photo of—the bird responsible.

In-Town Birds

Saturday, December 8th, 2018

Pileated Woodpecker, Rockport, Maine, 08 December 2018.

Pileated Woodpecker (male).

Got to the hill early this nippy morning. Temps of about 10 or 12 degrees (F) when first I looked, but mostly cloudless and only a slight breeze. Alas, there was early mowing going on up there, and the only birds I got a look at were in a distant flock of redpolls.

However, quite a few birds were poking about in and around town: a robin out back, finches and a nuthatch and a chickadee out front, even a pileated woodpecker plucking cherries from a tree along rushing Route 1.

The food’s just where you can find it, I guess.
