Heard tell that a round snow showers was due soon, so Jack and I took an early hike this morning. A few birds at the start of things, but only chickadees and magpies up the mountainside—that is, until I spotted the eagles.

Three Golden Eagles, rising and circling and, finally, moving away.

A hazy sun oversaw the rest of our time up there—which included a few more of the usual species. Also played a little game of peekaboo with a mule deer doe.

The eagles were the high point, though.

Mild and thawy this morning, with temperatures up toward 40° (F). Lots of birds in the neighborhood—and many of the same ones up the mountainside. In fact, I saw or heard all 11 species on just the first switchback portion of our hike.

I also got a look at nineteen elk a good ways above us, lounging around at break-time, apparently.

Even Birdier

An overcast, drippy, warmish (above freezing) morning. We waited until 11 a.m., dog and I, then set out on our daily hike—and right away it began to rain a little. Also snow a little. Mixed precipitation.

By the time we climbed the switchbacks, the precipitation had become all snow. Only three bird species (heard, not seen) our whole way up—but then, upon returning, the precipitation stopped abruptly.

And the birds began to appear. Long story short: I ended up with twelve species on my mountainside list—and a couple more elsewhere.

Tonight still mostly cloudy out—and will remain so into next week (other than a day or two). Or so the prognosticators say.
