Juncos Everywhere

Sunday, October 20th, 2019
Dark-eyed Junco, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 20 October 2019.
Dark-eyed Junco.

Snowed a little overnight for the first time this season. Dog an I waited until late morning to hike the mountain…

…and found juncos everywhere. Dark-eyed Juncos, but in many different sets of plumage in many color combinations. Dark ones, pale ones, two-tone, you name it. There were scores of ’em up there.

Snow should be melted soon (except in the upper altitudes, of course).

Ten Species

Saturday, October 19th, 2019
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, East Milllcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 19 October 2019.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Chilly morning, dampness in the air, a little wet snow forecast for tonight. Didn’t hear or see many birds at first—rather, encountered a lot of humans and canines, it being Saturday—but by the end of my long hike with Jack, I had a total of ten.

This included the solitaire again, only this time I heard its extended series of territorial notes (but got only a distant view). Cool.

Scrub-jay with peanut.

Cool morning, fair, quiet. In the mountain’s shadow, all was pretty quiet, and I didn’t expect to encounter many birds. But then the sun topped the ridge, and my list ended up with a dozen species.

Cool.
