More white-crowneds

White-crowned sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 01 October 2013.

White-crowned sparrow.

God, what a lovely day. I managed to work until about 3 p.m., and then I had to take off on my bicycle. Rode about twenty miles, which took me about an hour and a half, with stops. Didn’t see many birds while cycling—although I did ID a rock pigeon by its shadow—but there were a few at Beech Hill when Jack and I walked up. Tons of yellow-throats. A little flock of white-throated sparrows. And another three of four white-crowned sparrows.

Cooling off tonight, but we’re supposed to get a streak of lovely days.

Yellow-rumped warbler.

Busy ol’ Monday. Cool outside, light winds. Thought about a bike ride but kept right on working instead. Until mid-afternoon, when I took Jack with me to take care of some errands. We ended up at Beech Hill.

White-crowned sparrow.

A few people there. A few dogs. A few birds—more than a few. Many yellow-rumps still, and another kinglet. Heard catbirds, towhees, flickers. Again white-throated sparrows appeared on the trail ahead of us. Three of them, this time.

Jays calling all over the place today. Funny how I hardly ever hear them in spring or early summer. They find their voices in fall.
