Scream of the Red-tail

Wednesday, June 1st, 2016
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 01 June 2016.

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

You will never forget
the moment you first year
a Red-tailed Hawk scream
somewhere in the atmosphere.

You’ve heard the sound—
it’s an old film sound cliche
often used for eagles,
vultures, you name it—

but until you’ve heard
the actual scream above you
in the blue-blue sky
and look up at the hawk itself

circling lazily above you,
and then hear it scream again—
a sound, a song primeval—
you have not truly lived.
