Frozen Fog

Tuesday, March 28th, 2017
Ice storm, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 March 2017.

Ice storm.

A wonderland surprise awaited us at Beech Hill this morning, Jack and me. A thick fog had frozen on limbs and twigs and stalks of grass, leaving crystalline sheaths and orbs and droplets.

Missed Photo Ops

Monday, March 27th, 2017

Family crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 March 2017.

Soon after we’d begun our hike today, a Pileated Woodpecker called loudly from behind dog and me. We stopped, turned, slowly retraced our steps along the icy trail. It called again, very near us. It had to be in one of three big bare hardwoods, but couldn’t see the bird. We walked nearer. Still no bird.

Then I heard it again, coming from behind me again—but this time quite a bit farther away. The bird had somehow flown over our heads and ended up in the young oak a couple hundred yards up the trail.

Missed photo opportunities are just part of the game, yo.

First-of-year Sparrow

Sunday, March 26th, 2017
Song Sparrow, Rockport, Maine, 26 March 2017.

Song Sparrow.

Today was bright, brilliant, blue-skied, warming, snow-covered, and full of active birds. The sweetest arrival in my little yard was a first-of-year Song Sparrow. (I heard another singing nearby.)
