Sparrow and Lark

Saturday, October 22nd, 2016
Savannah Sparrow and Horned Lark, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 October 2016.

Savannah Sparrow and Horned Lark.

During a lull in the rain
dog and I hiked our daily hill in fog
as I took photos of trailside foliage
laden with water droplets

and kept my ears open to
the voices of birds.
Ascending, I heard the twitter of a Horned Lark,
but it flew before I could aim my camera.

Hairy Woodpecker.

Descending, near the stretch of trail
where I’d heard and seen the lark,
I spied a Savannah sparrow
that had only one leg

but a voracious appetite.
Three or four times the little bird
would tump over,
then quickly right itself.

As I was taking its picture,
a Horned Lark entered the frame—
a lark I assume was the one I’d seen earlier,
since they rarely travel alone.

I Love This Foggy Day

Dark-eyed Junco, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 October 2016.

Dark-eyed Junco.

Rain early, hike late.
Alone with the dog
In the fog on the hill.

Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 October 2016.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Few birds’ voices,
Then a Hermit Thrush
On the trail so near us,

But I missed the shot.
Not so the junco
Down in the tick-filled woods.

Yellow-rumped Warblers
All over the place.
Plucked twenty ticks off Jack.

Meadowhawks

Thursday, October 20th, 2016
Autumn Meadowhawk (female), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 October 2016.

Autumn Meadowhawk (female).

This bright, chilly morning revealed few Beech Hill birds—not visually, at least—but it was brimming with dragonflies. Autumn Meadowhawks were everywhere.

As the birds stayed mostly hidden, meadowhawks readily presented themselves here and there up the trail, waiting until Jack and I got very near before skedaddling away. At the summit, and over onto the sunny eastern side, they appeared in still greater numbers, arrayed on leaves and stones and the boardwalk. One nearly lit on Jack. One nearly lit on me.

We encountered a snake over there, too—a good-sized Common Garter Snake—which slipped noiselessly into the ticky undergrowth. And we encountered another as we got near to completing our hike. This second snake had clearly just dined on something (the lump was all-too-apparent), which is perhaps why it didn’t mind putting up with a little photo session.

I liked hearing the notes of Brown Creeper and Golden-crowned Kinglet. They’ve got quite similar voices, those two species.
