Puzzles, Chickadees

Black-capped Chickadee, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 08 February 2021.
Black-capped Chickadee.

We saw no other human or dog on the trails this bright, warmish morning, Captain Jack and I. Nor other mammals. However, we did encounter a number of birds.

The usual guys, mostly. Up the deer trail, I did hear a subtle, squeaky little call of what must’ve been a small bird, It called several times, and I crept closer, but I never got a look at it. A mystery, a puzzle. But I’ve learned—over time—not to feel too disappointed at missing a puzzling ID: by far the most satisfying puzzle solutions are those that take a while to achieve.

Meanwhile, there were chickadees. A little pack of ’em just as we were returning. I love do them, the chickadees.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
