Deer and redstarts

American Redstart, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 10 June 2015.

American Redstart.

Jack and I hiked Beech Hill with a friend this early evening—a nice switch from our usual solitary jaunt. Plus, the world outside was more or less spectacular: warmth, sun, not a lot of wind, green, fragrant. Plus, birds.

Whitetail doe, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 10 June 2015.

Whitetail doe.

I ended up listing twenty bird species—most of them heard, but good looks at a few—and a conspicuous mammal. From the summit, we watched a whitetail doe watch us for a while, then lope away down the slope. I wonder if there was a fawn about. Deer don’t usually stick around as long as this one did.

You can tell it’s that fledgling time of year, the birds being skittish but singing occasionally, giving their young ’uns a taste of music.

The redstarts were particularly vocal today. (Even got a glimpse of a singer.)

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
