Song Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 July 2014.

Song Sparrow.

Only a half-day at my desk today. The other half I spent running errands, riding my bicycle, hiking with Jack, having drinks with friends in Camden. A productive day, and not a little fun.

Black-eyed Susan, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 July 2014.

Black-eyed Susan.

But the most memorable part was the hike: a hot, sunny day (which I experienced fully while out cycling) had just begun to turn hazy, then overcast. A high wind rose. You could just feel the change in the atmospheric pressure. Jack and I were the only ones up there.

The birds were vocal and active, though—in fact, Savannah Sparrows were singing all over the place for the first time in weeks (young birds have fledged, I’m guessing)—and I found myself wondering if birds can somehow detect subtle atmospheric pressure changes, via some obscure sensory organ or something. Glimpsed a lot of species, too, but didn’t get any dramatic photos.

In evening, it rained pretty good for a short bit. Tonight is coolish and pleasant. We’re supposed to get brushed by a very early tropical storm in the next few days.

We shall see.
