I Wonder

Wednesday, August 25th, 2021
Rufous Hummingbird (fem/imm), East Millcreek Salt Lake City, Utah, 25 August 2021.
Rufous Hummingbird (fem/imm).

Cool, breezy, quiet hike this morning with dog. Secretive birds were laying low, and nothing too out-of-the-ordinary. Well, except for a random Yellow Warbler that I couldn’t manage to get a photo of.

Fewer hummingbirds, finches, scrub-jays—pretty much every species. Several IDs were by voice only.

What with all the environmental craziness, I wonder about early migration.

Heat Rising

Friday, June 4th, 2021
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 03 June 2021.
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.

Cool in the shade this morning, and hot in the sun. Not as hot as it was this afternoon (mid- to upper-90s (F)), but we got to the trailhead early, dog and I, and had a quick hike. Slowed down on the shady stretches and sped up in the sunny ones.

Saw and/or heard quite a few birds. Got a photo of a gnatcatcher singing animatedly (as they all do). Out on a sunny twig, too, that little bird.

Might reach 100° tomorrow.
