Winter Warbler

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 17 February 2023.
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Maybe every other day this winter, on my Beech Hill hikes with dog, I’ve seen (or heard) Yellow-rumped Warblers. I knew they were a hardy species, and I’ve seen ’em in up there in winter before, but I figured it was an uncommon thing. Not this winter, though.

This gray morning (with precipitation on the way), I saw more ’rumps than I think I have since spring—at least a dozen. And, as usual lately, they were hanging around with bluebirds.

The temp’s supposed to dip tonight (has been thawy for the past few days), but there’s supposed to be light winds and sun. Will there also be bluebirds?

Winter Thrushes

Thursday, February 16th, 2023
Eastern Bluebird proposal, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 February 2023.
Eastern Bluebird proposal.

At sunrise this morning, the air temperature was in the 40s (F). (Don’t think it even touched freezing last night.) Also bright and sunny. I was hoping for a bluebird day, but there was quite a little wind at the summit of the hill.

Not huge numbers of birds (or species), but the usual suspects. Titmouse, chickadee, crow, robin. Heard a finch, saw a red-tail (perhaps the most notable sighting today), heard—and spied from a distance (no photos darn it) a big, healthy raven.

Returning up the hill after we’d made the full hike, I heard bluebirds—and sure enough, a pair were hanging out on a bird box near Beech Hill Road. And later, more robins.

Two thrushes that seem to stick around all winter these warmer days.

[In past years, there were always winter days when I had no birds on my list, but not this winter so far.]

Woodpecker

Wednesday, February 15th, 2023
Pileated Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 February 2023.
Pileated Woodpecker.

The forecasters predicted this morning would be much like yesterday’s, and they weren’t wrong: mostly cloudy (with bright patches), not too cold or windy. The main difference for me and dog: We headed up the wooded trail.

Mostly the usual winter suspects—but suddenly the song of a cardinal. First one of those in a while. Also bluebirds, still, both in the woods and above.

Returning, I heard the soft tapping of a woodpecker, and spied another pileated (likely the same male I saw a couple-three days ago). It was gracious enough to supply a photo.

Tomorrow’s supposed to be warmer and sunny (with bluebirds, no doubt). And Friday, it’s supposed to rain.
