A Bluebird Day

Thursday, December 22nd, 2022

Eastern Bluebird.

First full day of winter. And it felt rather wintry—sub-freezing overnight, 20-something (F) as dog and I hit the trail, calm and overcast to start. But soon enough, the clouds moved away to reveal the bluest of skies.

Had some turkeys and nuthatches and chickadees in the woods, crows and goldfinches and yellow-rumps in the fields. And bluebirds. Many bluebirds.

But most notable, today, was the fact that we ran into a young friend and his new fiancée. And by “new,” I mean new as of this day, this blue-sky morning. They’d hiked up to Beech Nut at dawn and spent hours at Beech Nut, and at some point he popped the question, and she responded positively.

It made me very happy to mention to them that their engagement happened on what was unquestionably a bluebird day.

Winter Comes

Wednesday, December 21st, 2022
American Crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 December 2022.
American Crow.

I didn’t bundle up too much for my hike with dog this morning. That’s because the forecast called for calm air and some sun. It was quite calm, in fact, but also mostly overcast early—still, it was a lovely day, and comfortable excursion for both of us.

Penobscot Bay.

More species than yesterday, but fewer photo ops. In fact, the only bird I got a photo of was a crow that happened to fly over our path. (I did miss a few pics of too-quick-moving smaller birds.) But the light over the bay was wondrous, and the air tasted wonderful, and Captain Jack got to smell a bunch of smells and lead me quickly back to the pickup at the end of things.

Now that it’s evening, winter has come. Tomorrow’s will be our first hike in the new season.

Farewell Fall

Tuesday, December 20th, 2022
Hairy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 December 2022.
Hairy Woodpecker.

Dog and I went for our hike on a day much like yesterday, with an early chill, a stout wind, and sun—only more sun this morning. Last day of fall, and with a particularly wintry feel.

What with the wind singing a low moan up in the bare oak limbs, I didn’t expect many birds, but coming up through the winds, I spied a few. And toward the summit a few more. Then returning up and over, a lonesome gull soaring in the blue.

Kind of looking forward to our first hike of winter.
