Wonderland

Snowshoe Hare, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 January 2023.
Snowshoe Hare.

The “wintry mix” forecast for this morning turned out to have arrived early. When dog and I hit the trail—the open trail, it being a gray overcast—we found a little coating of ice on everything. Temps right around freezing, and fairly stout wind was coming out of the northeast.

Few birds, but what a fun hike anyway. Then, at the end of it, I wondered aloud if I might spy the hare in its little hidey-hole—and I sure enough did.

And later, doing errands in Rockland, a Bad Eagle flew low over Broadway by the high school. What a lovely winter-wonderland sort of day.

American Robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 January 2023.
American Robin.

A cloudy morning after a drippy night, with moisture in the air and a slight breeze. Didn’t expect a lot of bird activity, and sure enough got little. However, It was nice to see a big ol’ flock of Robins—one of which stopped in a shady place to pose.

A “wintry mix” is forecast for tomorrow. We shall see.

The Winter Warbler

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 January 2023.
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

A tad bit cooler than yesterday to start, overcast, and with calmer air. Dog and I headed up the main trail, and I had only one interesting bird—a raven flying by in the distance, with the bay behind it—until we reached the summit and began descending into the woods.

Down in the trees, I heard little woodland birds—nuthatches, titmice—and spotted them along with a Downy Woodpecker and a Brown Creeper.

Returning the the summit, I heard a bluebird, then saw several, accompanied by several yellow-rumps. It’s January, and here’s a flock of wood-warblers. Gotta confess I wasn’t surprised—these hardly little birds nest far north of us, and a few often winter over—but still I had to admire their audacity.

You just gotta give it to Yellow-rumped Warblers.
