 American Robin. Up pretty early. Sunny and cool, with birds about. Got a lot of good work done—and then asked Jack if he wanted to go for a hike. “Yes,” he replied.
 Eastern Chipmunk. By the time we reached Beech Hill, the day was straight-up warm. Quite a few birds about—including first-of-year Chipping Sparrow and Tree Swallow—but no raptors. But that’s OK. There will be raptors.
At home, I got a good look at a bunch of birds, too—including a robin with what looked like a bit of straw stuck in his breast. All I could think of was: “I,” said the sparrow, “with my bow and arrow.”
The tune I had stuck in my head today was the Mickey Mouse Show theme song. Just a little giddy with the anticipation of spring, I guess.

 Northern Cardinal. Seventeen degrees (F) out when first I checked. A little ice on the brook. Few birds about early—but they started showing up when the temps rose into the 20s.
 Askance. Got busy working and worked (with a lunch break) straight through to the end of the day, when dog and I finally headed up to Beech Hill. By this time it had begun to snow. Little tiny flakes. A bit breezy. Temperatures were coming down from their sub-freezing high. Wore my winter coat.
Bunch of birds, though. Most noteworthy, perhaps, was the bluebird calls I heard while gazing through tiny snowflakes down the southern slope, looking for robins in the sumac.
Thought we might pay for the warm winter—but that’s ridiculous. Just Nature enjoying a few giggles.
I love this day.

 American Crow. Low-20s (F) this morning. Breezy. Shower, breakfast, check the news online—then off on an early hike with Jack.
 Silver bay. Just one couple when we got there, bundled against the wintry chill, but a few others showed up soon enough to witness from a hilltop the start of a beautiful day.
Bird-wise, the most excitement I had was when I heard Bohemian Waxwings at the post office and looked up to see a flock of about twenty or thirty of ’em swirl overhead. They’re around.
Tonight is black and starry and moonlit. Spring begins tomorrow. Snow still in the forecast for the following day.
