Many Robins

Sunday, March 25th, 2018
American robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 25 March 2018.

American robin.

Flocks of migrating robins descended this sunny, breezy day—scores of them in the lee of the eastern slopes of Beech Hill. Dark-colored Canadian robins, I’m pretty sure. Kind of skittish, too.

Also watched a raven fly over, croaking and playing in the air.

The Primal Imperative

Friday, March 23rd, 2018
Eastern Bluebirds, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 23 March 2018.

Eastern Bluebirds.

Snow everywhere first thing today—but also sun, and warming temperatures, and calm winds, so much of it melted, the snow. Birds were active, including a pair of bluebirds I spied on one of the Beech Hill boxes. Never mind all the snow that surrounded them.

Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. A time to pair off, to yield to the primal imperative.

Sweet Respite

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018
White-throated Sparrow, Rockport, Maine, 03 January 2018.

White-throated Sparrow.

The temperature rose swiftly for a change this sunny morning, reaching double-digits (F) by the time Jack and I headed out for our hike. Before we did that, though, I spied a few little passerines dining on a Staghorn Sumac out back. One particular drupe caught the attention of a both a White-throated Sparrow and a female Northern Cardinal—but the latter, larger bird chased the former away.

Northern Cardinal (female).

Our hike was glorious. I sang along with a little group of Black-capped Chickadees delivering their spring “Fee-bee!” (They can already tell the photoperiod is lengthening.) And than a big adult Bald Eagle flew by.

Today was a sweet respite between this past week’s deep freeze and tomorrow’s promised winter hurricane.
