Thrush and towhee

Eastern Phoebe, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 18 April 2015.

Eastern Phoebe.

Long morning hike up a luscious, muddy Beech Hill trail. Ticks on the weed stems, flies here and there. Saw my first Mourning Cloak of the year. Also saw a turkey—and heard my first two Eastern Towhees of the year. And the distinctive whine of a Hermit Thrush.

Phoebe food, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 18 April 2015.

Phoebe food.

Seventeen species, most so far this year. Proof that it’s April—and that number will rise.

Rain tonight. The smell of petrichor.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
