Before the rains

Hermit Thrush.

Today I took an earlier hike with Jack than usual, what with a forecast of big rains. Gray were the skies as we ascended—along, saw no other humans (or canines) up there—and nervous was the feel of the air. All over the place flitted birds.

Hermit Thrushes (several), perhaps a dozen Dark-eyed Juncos, a gazillion Yellow-Rumped Warblers, a couple Hairy Woodpeckers, a Northern Flicker. I also spied a Magnolia Warbler in drab fall plumage. Many, many sparrows.

I thought I saw a chippy, but I couldn’t be sure. I could, however, be sure of the White-crowned Sparrow I saw, and a few White-Throated Sparrows, and some Song Sparrows. Oddly, on the north stone wall of Beech Nut sat three yellow-rumps and a junco. Not sure what they were up to there—but I did notice some loose swarms of fair-sized, dark, flimsy-looking flies.

Not long after we got back in the car, the rains came.

Elsewhere, the flock of geese is still hanging out in the big green field on Meadow Street. Have seen them there nearly every day for a couple weeks.

Tonight it’s been raining like crazy off and on. Supposed to continue for three solid days.
