Young warblers

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014
Black-throated Green Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 July 2014.

Black-throated Green Warbler.

Rain moved in. Heard it before waking up entirely, then spent much of the day indoors. In afternoon it stopped, and things dried, but the sky remained overcast, and fog settled in the low places. Beech Hill was dim and shadowy, and my bird photos were subsequently blurry and vague—but that kind of matched the day.

Wood lily.

Of note: little warblers were flitting around all over the place. And by “little,” I mean not only youngsters (there were plenty of those), but their frantic parents (not much larger), in a frenzy to keep all the hungry mouths full. There wasn’t a lot of singing; there was a lot of flitting. I watched four species engaged in swift, furtive fledgling-feeding behavior within a hundred feet of the parking lot in fact. Fun.

Up the hill, the sparrows were active. Similar feeding going on. Also towhees.

Earlier this evening, some thunder blew through. We’re advise to expect more overnight.

Which is fine. I rather like a thunderstorm.
