Red-tailed Hawk, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 09 September 2019.
Red-tailed Hawk.

Cool this morning—coolest Utah temperature I’ve felt. Sun, a little haze. This afternoon, while returning from an errand, I heard the unmistakable cry of a Red-tailed Hawk. Above us, dog and me, I saw an unkempt looking, post-molt redtail, circling above an apt-looking mountain landscape. Sure sign of migration.

More thundershowers today, soaking things a bit. Dries fast because the landscape is so thirsty, but a nice change-of-pace. Quite a few birds on today’s hike—including a surprise Warbling Vireo hanging with some chickadees. Speaking of, I got my first photo of one here finally.

But the highlight of the hike was a pair of mule deer I happened to spot down the slope from us. The female even stopped to pose.

Soon Migration

Saturday, September 7th, 2019
Lesser Goldfinch, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 07 September 2019.
Lesser Goldfinch.

Birds are antsy. Seem to be anyway. Quails running all over the place, little accipiter showing up and quieting things down. Goldfinches fattening up on sunflower seeds.

Fall migration should commence soon. A favoreite time of year I’m looking forward to.
