Caw of the Crow

Thursday, March 28th, 2019
American Crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 March 2019.
American Crow.

This one felt like a spring morning. New birds arriving on a stout south breeze—juncos at home and on the hill, geese flying north robins everywhere. But this morning was all about crows.

The cawed, they flew about in threes, they perched on the roof of Beech Nut with their wings and feathers blowing about in the wind. And one perched on the tallest spruce in the grove, cawing in series of three and four. I am a big fan of crows.

Drummer

Pileated Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 March 2019.
Pileated Woodpecker.

The Pileated Woodpecker was back this morning, holding a battle of the drummers at another male of his species a ways down the road. Minutes of watching his careful, purposeful listening and drumming gave me a feeling of almost blissful calm.

Potential Energy

Tuesday, March 26th, 2019
Eastern Bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 26 March 2019.
Eastern Bluebird.

This morning—sub-freezing, breezy, clear—had the feel of spring. The hint of it. The taste of potential energy.

Beginning with the loud call of the neighborhood Pileated Woodpecker. A list of varied bird species. Little flock of first-of-year Common Grackles.

Later, at the harbor, I watched a loon eat catch and eat again. (Probably the same loon.)
