Fickle Day

Thursday, September 6th, 2018
Cedar Waxwing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 September 2018.

Cedar Waxwing.

A steamy morning, foggy until the sun burned the fog away (which didn’t take long). Sulphur butterflies all over the hill, also a Monarch or two, multiple dragonfly species, other pollinators. Birds were lurking in the shadows, what with the warmth and humidity.

Orange Sulphur, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 September 2018.

Orange Sulphur.

In afternoon, a big storm blew through, with rain and thunder and winds that felled trees here inshore and out on Monhegan. Poured—but not for long.

A fickle day.

September Fly Hatch

Wednesday, September 5th, 2018
White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 September 2018.

White-breasted Nuthatch.

Thanks to a fly hatch rising from the grass this morning, multiple bird species showed up in the spruce grove at the summit of Beech Hill this morning. I just missed a couple great photos, but I did get a couple decent ones of a nuthatch.

Nighthawk!

Tuesday, September 4th, 2018
Monarch caterpillar, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 04 September 2018.

Monarch caterpillar.

The most thrilling part of this day—birdwise or otherwise—was this warm early afternoon when, upon exiting Good Tern Coop in Rockland, I saw a Common Nighthawk winging its way over the parking lot. I got so excited I walked back in to tell the clerks what I’d seen.

I remember in the old days when nighthawks nested on the roofs of the Rockland business block, but until today I hadn’t seen a single one in town in probably 20 years. Last one I’ve seen was flying above Beech Hill a few years ago.

Speaking of: not a single decent bird pic from my hike with dog today today. But I did get a pic of a Monarch caterpillar.
