For the first time in I don’t know how long, Jack didn’t accompany me on my Beech Hill hike today. (He’s taking it easy after yesterday’s little dustup.) Ironically, I brought a poop bag back with me—his own poop bag from yesterday, which I lost track of during the, um, little episode.
Anyway, I took my time, stood looking into a young wooded area for several minutes, which revealed chickadees cardinals, and a male redstart. Only the chickadees were making any sound at all. Then, on up the hill, I spotted my first harrier in a while. Heard the soft squee! of a waxwing. Heard alarm notes from: Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, catbird. Spotted (but did not hear) a secretive towhee.
Did hear the brief calls of goldfinch, yellowthroat, and Pileated Woodpecker.
All in all, though, a quiet evening.
