Another pretty lovely day, if a little windy. And another day I spent most of inside.
However, when dog and I finally did get up and about, we had a lovely hike. Despite the wind, Beech Hill Preserve was hopping: numerous people and kids and dogs up there. Also quite a few bird species—though they’re still laying low, what with the young ’uns and all.
The high point was a few nice chats I had with fellow hikers. The high point, bird-wise, was the Savannah Sparrow I heard from the porch of Beech Nut, singing loudly. I knew from the sound (and experience) that this was the bird that perches at the southern peak of the roof and lets loose. For such a subtle, dry, high-pitched trill, the song of a Savannah Sparrow carries well, and this guy knows the place to be—up there in the highest patch of grass for miles around.
King of the Hytte, I like to call him.
