Hearing voices

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012
Dark trail, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 13 June 2012.

Dark trail.

Rained all day. Not a torrent, but a steady soaking. Still drizzling at the end of it when Jack and I hit the wooded Beech Hill trails. Didn’t so much as hear a bird until we’d hiked about five minutes: chickadee. Got a glimpse of a chestnut-sided warbler high in the canopy—and that was it for sightings. However, I did hear voices, near and far.

Redstart, robin, crow. When the wind picked up, I had to duck over my camera, because it began to rain from the trees.

Ovenbird, towhee, yellow warbler. The yellow was calling very near us as we got to the dripping upper fields, but it stayed well hidden. Also heard yellowthroats, a catbird, and a song sparrow up there.

Returning, I heard a black-throated green warbler, a pewee, a goldfinch, and the first red-eyed vireo of our hike. Odd. I guess vireos don’t like singing in the rain.

On the way home, though, I got a glimpse of a big ol’ pileated woodpecker flapping across the road in front of us. Nice.

Still drippy out back this evening. Tomorrow will come sun—and more voices.
