Chickadee!

Sunday, March 10th, 2019

After a good hike up a familiar hill in warmish temperatures with a stout wind, I got nearly back to the parking lot before realizing I’d forgotten to retrieve a bag of dog poop that came from some other person’s dog. Went back for it, and on returning encountered a little flock of curious chickadees.

There’s always some gift to be had.

Tiny Tragedy

Ovenbird (deceased), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 August 2018.

Ovenbird (deceased).

It wasn’t the first time. Wasn’t even the second time. This morning was the third time I’ve found a window-struck Ovenbird lying dead beneath a window of Beech Nut.

Being woodland birds, Ovenbirds on the move in an open area might well be expected to move toward a shady, protected area out of the broad daylight. This one picked an unforgiving bank of southern windows. I took its little body and dropped it under a bush at the edge of a field.

“Sorry,” I said.
