“I love this day”

March 4th, 2016
Brown Creeper, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine. 04 March 2016.

Brown Creeper.

Today, this afternoon, while hiking back down Beech Hill with Jack in the cold air, after an odd mist of tiny snowflakes had fallen under clear blue skies, I felt the chill in my face, my numb lips, my numb fingers clutching a green bag of dog poop, and I looked over the rich brown-gray of the winter hardwoods stretching south over the lake to the Gulf of Maine, and distant Monhegan Island, I thought, then said aloud, “I love this day.”

Rock.

I think I’ll say that every day from now on. Or if I don’t, I’ll think it. ’Cause it’s true.

Winter’s breath

March 3rd, 2016
White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 March 2016.

White-breasted Nuthatch.

When I rose, a little early, the outside temperature was 7 degrees (F). Kind of gusty out already, too. After breakfast, it had risen to 8 degrees. An hour or so later it had climbed into the teens. By the time Jack and I hiked Beech Hill in afternoon, it was about 18 degrees. Pretty high northwest wind, too. A few little birds about. Blue, blue sky. Ice patterns.

Beech Leaf.

On the way home from our hike, I spied three turkey vultures circling in the chill air above Route 1.

Stars out tonight. Back down into the low teens. Winter’s breath lingers yet.

Squall

March 2nd, 2016
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 March 2016.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Rained all night—or much of it. Rained pretty much all morning, too. Temps in the low-40s (F) and windy. Waited until the rain stopped in afternoon to go out on a hike with dog.

Snow squall, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 March 2016.

Snow squall.

No other cars in the parking lot when we got to Beech Hill. Met one neighbor (and neighbor’s dog) coming down the trail. About half-way up—despite an edge of clear sky seemingly approaching from over the water in the south—it began to spit rain. I turned and saw the squall line coming from the west. Fast. It reached us just as we got to the summit.

Snow squall. Flakes zipping past fast, obscuring the bay, stinging my eyes. Was all kind of fun and unexpected.

Tonight there’s a wintry nip in the air. Bright stars in the firmament.
