MLK Day

January 16th, 2017
American robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 January 2017.

Nuthatch tongue, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 January 2017.

Nuthatch tongue.

For much of my lovely midday hike with dog, I heard just two bird species—nuthatch and crow. Returning, I spotted a herring gull. Then a murder of crows. But back at Beech Hill Road is where the action was: titmice, chickadees, a red squirrel, and berry-pickin’ robin.

A lovely Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We sure could use him now.

Lovely sky today. Spitting snow in morning above a snowless landscape. Nippy, breezy, beautiful. Not a lot of birds.

Another perch.

A cold, clear, calm Beech Hill hike this morning. Nine birds on my list—but the only one I saw was a grouse we flushed near the parking lot. The rest were voices.

So I stopped by the village, where I knew I’d find the local pigeon flock. And I took some pictures.
