Ol’ Pal Pileated

Wednesday, March 13th, 2019
Pileated Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2019.
Pileated Woodpecker (drumming).

Chilly at first light, but warmed up fast. Lots of birds on the hill, including my old pal Pileated Woodpecker, drumming on the utility pole as I first heard him do at least five years ago.

Also saw a bluebird cross Route 1 in front of me, alighting on a speed limit sign on the other side of the road.

Redpolls, Revisited

Sunday, February 24th, 2019
Common Redpolls, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 24 February 2019.
Common Redpolls.

Warmish (about freezing) and quite windy this morning early. Wind from the east—you know what that means.

Had an impressive number of species on today’s hill list (ten), including a singing cardinal. Also including a little passel of redpolls. Dang, those little dudes move fast.

Soon after we drove away, it began to snow. Later, it began to rain.

Winter Waxwings

Monday, February 11th, 2019
Bohemian Waxwing and Cedar Waxwing, Rockland, Maine, 11 February 2019.
Bohemian Waxwing and Cedar Waxwing.

Saw my first waxwings of winter today, in the parking lot of Hannaford, where I’d gone to pick up a few groceries, dining on the fruit of ornamental cherry trees. Most were Cedar Waxwings, but there was at least one Bohemian in there.

Several birds on the hill earlier, also, including a fleet Brown Creeper that I didn’t get a photo of. Randomly, while en route to places, I spotted pigeons, a mourning dove, and a red-tail being harassed by crows.

Big storm coming tomorrow sometime. Might need to bring snowshoes Wednesday.
