Hairy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 March 2014.

Hairy Woodpecker.

Changed the clocks last night, and so today when it seemed Jack and I hit Beech Hill at the same hour as yesterday, it was actually only 23 hours since . Sunny and still and quite pleasant. Quite a few birds around—especially woodpeckers. Down in the woods, I watched a pair of hairy woodpeckers move from tree to tree. Heard another woodpecker hammering loudly in the distance. Also heard the voice of a red-bellied woodpecker calling from down the wooded hill—and thought to go investigate but decided against it.

Elsewhere, I heard hammering, as well.

Snowy Owl.

Also elsewhere, I saw a snowy owl: yeah, I decided to drive over to the airport to see if any were still hanging around, and there was the youngster, behind the fence where he was another time I stopped there.

Finally getting a feeling of spring in the air here on the 44th parallel—and not only because of the time change.

Airport, revisited

Snowy owl (juvie), Knox County Regional Airport, Owls Head, Maine, 03 March 2014.

Snowy Owl (juvie).

Worked a bunch today, it being Monday. When it came time to head out for a hike with dog, I decided first to run a couple errands in town, which brought us near enough to the Knox County Regional Airport that I figured we’d just swing by there again today to see if the Snowy Owls were still there. We circumnavigated the whole airpot and, on the back stretch, pulled into the turnoff we’d visited yesterday. Just one owl there today—the youngster from yesterday (I feel sure).

Otherwise, crows, gulls, pigeons, and a quick icy hike up Beech Hill.

Beginning at 3:15 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

Owls Head owls

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014
Snowy Owl, Knox County Regional Airport, Owls Head, Maine, 02 March 2014.

Snowy Owl.

Took another early hike with Jack today. A few birds at Beech Hill—including a mess of crows harassing a red-tailed hawk—but nothing otherwise noteworthy. Afterward, running errands, I saw a bunch more birds (goldfinch, mallard, titmouse, starling, pigeon, dove), which sort of gave me the feeling that, despite the chill, spring isn’t far away.

Young Snowy Owl.

Worked all midday, then decided on a lark to take another hike up Beech Hill. Only chickadees up there this afternoon, but we did encounter a couple of dogs and a bunch of humans, including Jay, a birder friend, who informed me he’d just seen two Snowy Owls at the airport in Owls Head. So I figured what the heck—and we took a little trip to the Knox County Regional Airport.

Sure enough, there were two owls there: what looked like an adult female on the post of the gate and a young one on the snowy ground nearby.
