Potential Energy

Eastern Bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 26 March 2019.
Eastern Bluebird.

This morning—sub-freezing, breezy, clear—had the feel of spring. The hint of it. The taste of potential energy.

Beginning with the loud call of the neighborhood Pileated Woodpecker. A list of varied bird species. Little flock of first-of-year Common Grackles.

Later, at the harbor, I watched a loon eat catch and eat again. (Probably the same loon.)

Bluebird of Happiness.

A lovely brisk morning, a bit of wind, a bit below freezing, a bit of wind. Lots of birds about, including a couple first-of-year species—including my first Horned Lark in better than a year.

Also the first photo I’ve ever taken of one that actually shows the “horns.”

Duck Weather

Friday, March 22nd, 2019
Mallard in the rain, Rockport Harbor, Maine, 22 March 2019.
Mallard in the rain.

Rain for a change. Thirties (F), windy as heck, rainy. Super high tide, too, what with the solsticial full moon. Encountered a solitary redpoll on the hill, but not much else, so I took dog to the harbor and saw quite a few birds—most of them ducks.

Beginning at 10:45 a.m., I hiked the open trail.
