Sweet respite

Ruddy Duck (female), Chickawaukie Lake, Rockport, Maine, 23 November 2014.

Ruddy Duck (female).

A different sort of day. Nearly 40 degrees (F) when I first checked this morning, and the temperature continued on up to—eventually—50-something. Took Jack up to Beech Hill early, where a few others had the same idea. Not a lot of species there, but I did hear a bluebird and see a tree sparrow.

On the way to town (for a quick trip to the grocery store) is when things got interesting. Hadn’t been by Chickawaukie Lake for a while, and I noticed that seasonal coot invasion was underway. I also noticed a handful of diving ducks near the Route 17 turnout—so I pulled in. They were Ruddy Ducks, four or five of them, females and youngsters looked like. Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen any of those (if ever).

Probably a hundred coots. A few goldeneyes. Geese at the swim Beech. Town birds in town.

Did a little desk work but then decided 50-something was too good to pass up, so I went for a long bicycle ride. Felt great. Eighteen miles. En route, I added a bunch more species to today’s list—including a solitary Pileated Woodpecker near Route 1. I heard the bird first, then spotted it high in a tree, then pulled my bike over and dug my camera out of my backpack. I knew I’d stuck it in there for some reason.

Tonight it’s cooling off a bit. I hear we’ll be getting a little rain.

Winter workout

White-breasted nuthatches, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 28 December 2012.

White-breasted nuthatches.

A brilliantly sunny, nippy day with snow all around. After the first few inches of wet snow yesterday, several more inches of dry snow fell overnight, leaving a good little shovel job for me. Spent more than an hour at it and worked up a good sweat. Good thing I enjoy shoveling snow. The temperature didn’t top freezing, though, I think—will have to work to melt a little of that in the morning before the next forecast snowfall.

Beech Nut.

Took Jack up to Beech Hill in mid-afternoon. Just before plowing into the empty parking lot, we flushed six or seven mourning doves out of the road.

No other cars in the lot, but that’s because it hadn’t been plowed: a couple vehicles were parked along the road, and we met a gang of hardy hikers (a few in snowshoes) coming down. Alas, one group had a leashless dog. But what you gonna do?

Chickadees and nuthatches in the trees coming up, coots out in Chickawaukie Lake, a crow somewhere in the distance. Wind-blown shapes traced the snow on the slopes. The hike took a little longer than usual, and clomping through about six or eight inches of snow gave me another good workout. A titmouse serenaded us on our return (although I guess it’s a stretch to call it’s faint peeps and chatters a serenade, exactly).

Tonight we’ve got the thirteenth moon of the year lighting up the snow-covered landscape. I heard the high notes of a bird out there a minute ago. Not an owl—in fact, I think it might’ve been some kind of waterfowl in flight. I’m not that great with the calls of waterfowl, however.

Wind chill

Birch, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 27 December 2012.

Birch.

Saw a solitary robin on my Beech Hill hike with Jack this afternoon—which was noteworthy, considering the blizzard conditions up there. The bird must’ve been hunkered down in a trailside bush as we passed. It fluttered up and zipped away to the northeast, helped along by the wind.
