Common Yellowthroat, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 June 2014.

Common Yellowthroat.

Another wet, cool, drippy, rainy June day. Again I waited until later in the day to take Jack on a hike of Beech Hill Preserve—but only until noon, and only because the weather radar showed heavier rain moving in. We got to the summit and back before the rain began to come down. (It’s still coming down now, hours later.) But what a surprisingly fruitful hike.

Broad-winged Hawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 June 2014.

Broad-winged Hawk.

Seven species of warbler. Six species of sparrow (including Eastern Towhee). A Great-crested Flycatcher and an Eastern Wood-pewee—even though we didn’t venture into the woods at all. Foggy as hell, true, but that just makes me thankful my ears are still pretty good.

After our hike, as we came down Beech Hill Road in a pretty steady rain, I spied a Broad-winged Hawk on a utility line. Just perched there on one leg, looking down, as if ruminating. It didn’t seemed phased when I stopped the truck and snapped a couple photos.

More rain possible tomorrow, but the weekend forecasts say something about temperatures in the 70s (F), so I’m kind of psyched about that.

We all should be psyched about something.
