Busy day. Work. Dog to vet. Other chores. Beech Hill at the end of it.
Sunny, lovely, cool—but not so cool that I didn’t wear shorts and sandals again. Quite a few birds calling here and there (no true singing at this time of year). A bunch of yellow-rumps moving through, as expected. Saw a pair of yellowthroats and got a distant look at a phoebe or some other kind of flycatcher flitting about the little oak tree.
Met a fellow birder on the way up, and we chatted a while about species and migration and Monhegan, where I will be in a couple days (and which you can see floating on the southern horizon like a great, hazy whale).
Heard a pileated woodpecker. An osprey flew over. Heard a kinglet down toward the road.
Nice moon tonight. Getting that antsy autumn feeling that invigorates me so.
