Common yellowthroat, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine 22 May 2013.

Common yellowthroat.

Another rainy morning in which I stayed in. Work was kind of frustrating, so after the rain stopped and the fog moved over everything, I was glad to get out in the damp and mud with dog. Saw and heard quite a few birds, considering the weather and late hour. Highlights were the yellowthroats—male and female—that popped out into the open. Heard a black-throated blue warbler.

Common yellowthroat.

And returning through the woods I heard the voice of a hermit thrush whose particular song I recognize from last year. I must’ve stood there for five minutes listening to him sing. He couldn’t have been more than about fifty feet away. The thrushes stay so still, their voices are so diffuse and directionless, I never did manage to sport the bird.
