Feeding Fledglings

Wednesday, July 18th, 2018
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 18 July 2018.

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

The highlight of this morning’s hike came early: the busy work of a papa Chestnut-sided Warbler to feed his three fledglings, each at least twenty feet away from any other. The youngsters were loud, delivering double chip-chip! calls until Jack and I got close, when they’d shut up. Temporarily. Because if we stood very still for a while (we’re both good at that), they’d start up again. Then, after a while, when the adult returned and saw us, there’d come a series of single loud chip! notes, and they’d shut up again.

This papa bird was a busy one. It ain’t easy feeding fledglings.
