Firsts-of-year

American Robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 April 2015.

American Robin.

This was a luxuriant, chilly, mild, windy, moist, dry, exciting sort of day. Exciting mostly because of all the seemingly sudden bird activity out there. For example, just as I drove by some friends crossing the road, the first Tree Swallow I’ve seen this year flew over the right in front of me, flashing blue in the brilliant sun. And I heard the voice a Chipping Sparrow out of a skylight off Meadow Street—as well as about six or eight other singing species.

Alder catkins, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 April 2015.

Alder catkins.

To my ears at sunny, breezy Beech Hill this afternoon came the song of a Field Sparrow. And overhead flew a big silent raven.

Soon I might even get some decent photos of these newly arrived exotics (well, not counting the raven).

P.S. Frogs singing day and night just now…
