Black-capped Chickadee.

The temp this morning was a few degrees warmer than yesterday. The winds were quite a bit stronger. The perceived air temperature was about the same. A beautiful day for a puffed-up chickadee.

Survivor

March 4th, 2017
Attempted camouflage (Northern Cardinal), Rockport, Maine, 04 March 2017.

Attempted camouflage (Northern Cardinal).

The temperature was 5 degrees (F) when first I checked, and the wind had already risen. Figured it was best just to head out. And, oh, man, was it cold up Beech Hill. Saw ravens, though. And—oddly—a little flock of European Starlings.

Jack didn’t seem to mind the wind and cold. In fact he seemed to dig it, even ran around a little with a grin on his face.

Me? In the middle it all, I know it’s fleeting. And at its end, I feel somehow accomplished, or immune, or amaranthine. I believe a person’s gotta go out for a long walk in deep wind-chill like few times a year, if only to feel like a survivor.

Turkeys and Bluebirds

March 3rd, 2017
Eastern Bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 March 2017.

Eastern Bluebird.

I awoke this morning to the gobbling of turkeys outside my bedroom window. There were two pair out there, walking slowly, poking about. The temperature had dipped overnight—teens (F) when I first checked. And the wind blew. My Beech Hill hike with dog was brisk and frigid.

Wild Turkey, Rockport, Maine, 03 March 2017.

Wild Turkey.

That didn’t discourage the bluebirds, though. Watched three perch and dip in the vicinity of the near bird box. A pair perched atop it. Not many other birds up there in the wind, though.

On our return, the turkeys were still hanging around out back. Jack noticed them first. He has an interest in Wild Turkeys.
