Chickadee in the Snow

Friday, December 7th, 2018
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 December 2018.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Early morning hike in snow. Light snow, flurries. Before the sun emerged, rose, and melted it, the snow lay light and fluffy on everything. But it didn’t fool a chickadee poking around for seeds.

Little Carnivore

Thursday, December 6th, 2018
Northern Shrike, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 December 2018.

Northern Shrike.

It might’ve been a different bird. It might’ve just been moving through. But I spotted a shrike again on the hill this morning—a nippy, frosty breezy, early-wintery sort of morning. In fact, I spotted two shrikes, which might’ve been the same bird (not sure).

A few other birds also, but the one that sticks with me is the little carnivore.

Silence

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018
Common Redpoll, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 December 2018.

Common Redpoll.

Today was chilly—about 20 degrees (F)—and quite still. The hill was intermittently silent. Truly as quiet as it could possibly be. Occasionally a vehicle would drive along a road nearby, or a bird would call.

At the end of my morning hike with dog, a little gang of redpolls dropped by.
