Ravens Again

Monday, December 27th, 2021
Common Raven, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 27 December 2021.
Common Raven.

Another chilly, breezy day—in fact, a lot breezier than yesterday. A little new snow, not much. Aside from a couple hikers (and dogs) at the trailhead, Captain Jack and I were pretty much alone up there.

Alone except for very few bird species, quite a few deer, and—again—five ravens. I heard a croak, looked up, and quickly counted five. Same five as yesterday? Dunno, but only one kept in sight enough for me to grab a (not great) photo.

Had a snow squall this evening. Supposed to get cold tonight. We shall see.

Segue

Friday, December 24th, 2021
Lesser Goldfinch, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 24 December 2021.
Lesser Goldfinch.

A warm, mostly overcast morning—but no precipitation. (Did have a shower late last night and a trace of fresh snow.) No breeze to speak of, and the footing was good for dog and me. Not many bird species, and fewer still would show themselves, but it was nice to hear the whine of a couple towhees for a change.

Mammals were out: heard a solitary singing coyote, got good looks at a cottontail, and counted six deer up the north side of little Coyote Canyon.

Back home, a pair of goldfinches stopped by. And this evening, I even heard a little Christmas Eve thunder out there—a nice segue into a holiday weekend.

Windy Morn

Thursday, December 23rd, 2021
House Finch, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 23 December 2021.
House Finch.

Had a little wind this overcast morning, but none of the forecast rain showers. This suited dog and me just fine—despite the fact that temps in the 40s (F) made for some greasy trails. Still we managed all right. And despite the generally dearth of bird activity (thanks mostly to the nice, stout wind), we actually dug the hike.
