A bird to chase

Saturday, April 11th, 2015

Northern Harrier, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 April 2015.

Northern Harrier.

A partly sunny, partly cloudy, always windy day. Did my taxes for most of it. Finished ’em, too—which left me astonished but pleased, never mind that I’ve got to pay. And a nice, mostly lonesome hike up Beech Hill with Jack, my dog, capped the day nicely. If frigidly. The air temperature was in the 40s (F), but with the wind, my fingers still began to go numb. But all it takes to forget all discomfort is something out there, a bird to chase. A harrier served that purpose up there today.

Tonight, the evening star set brightly through the leafless trees up the hill out back.

Kestrel

American Kestrel, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 April 2015.

American Kestrel.

Nippy out. Some sun early, but overcast and breezy late. Snow in the forecast for tonight.

But today, this afternoon, in a nice stroke of fortune, I got to see my first kestrel of the year. (I also saw a small falcon fly overhead from south to north, carrying something in its talons. Too far away to ID. Merlin? Peregrine?)

And tonight—before the snow—heard my first woodcock.

Copacetic day

Tuesday, April 7th, 2015

Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 April 2015.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Did a lot of work today. Worked all overcast morning and into cloudy afternoon. By late afternoon, the sky began to show blue patches, and the air temp climbed up into the low-forties (F), and Jack, my dog, gave me that look, and so we took a quick hike.

Northern Harrier.

Quite a few birds up there but, oddly, no other humans or dogs. None, that is, until we got back down to the parking lot, when two humans and two dogs appeared. I happened to know one of the humans, in fact. But it was kind of nice, up until that point, to have the hill to ourselves.

Another gray ghost up there—do male harriers arrive earlier than females?—and a solitary phoebe. Lots and lots of Song Sparrows in the fringes. A singing goldfinch. A glimpse of a Pileated Woodpecker.

And a chickadee perched on last year’s old sapsucker tap.

Yet another perfectly copacetic day.
