May Day—the day Jack and I begin hiking the wooded trail. It was quiet and chilly and bright. Very small ferns unfurling, tiny leaf buds on trees. An inconvenient wind, but a few migrants (and residents) made themselves known.
I went looking for a thrush. I found one. I also found another Blue-headed Vireo near the summit in the lee. Also stood there while a pair of Northern Harriers swooped overhead. Plenty of Yellow-rumped Warblers moving through.
Ah, May Day. Every day this month holds sweet, sweet promise.
