That Awkward Age

Rose-breasted Grosbeak (juvie).

Birds abound at Beech Hill these days—the majority of them (seemingly, at least) youngsters. Like the juvie phoebe I watched begin to scratch its head with its feet, then fall fluttering from its perch. Or the young chasing robins. Or the pair of teenage towhees, or the one lone young grosbeak.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
