Got up early. Blustery day—gray, with a suggestion of rain. Warmish, but breezy enough to wear a sweatshirt.
House Sparrow across the road. What sounded like a Pileated Woodpecker out back, but I couldn’t be sure. Herring gulls sailing in the wind. Crows stalking still-green grassy yards.
Hiked with Jack at midday. Saw a Red-breasted Nuthatch at Beech Hill for the first time in at least a year, I’d say. Also a Turkey Vulture for the second straight day. Also a young Red-tailed Hawk. I watched the hawk for quite a while as it rose, then hovered, then dipped down amid the colorful landscape and out of sight.
Then back up the hawk rose. I saw no catch in its talons.
Full lunar eclipse before dawn in the morning. I believe it will be cloudy—but will find out soon enough.
