Today turned out to be a similar day to yesterday—except that it rained and I only hiked Beech Hill with one dog this afternoon. Plenty of desk work, so it’s nice to have a quick hike nearby. Real nice. The nicest.
So we went and took a hike, Jack and me. It’s the only place we went today.
No one at the hill at all. It was drizzling. Quite a few birds in the drizzle—including a nuthatch, a titmouse, and a baby-voiced raven. Saw a couple of skittish sparrows on our way up, heard a flicker at the summit, saw another sparrow on the way down. Then, as we wound through the little copse of small trees near the parking lot, I saw a ruby-crowned kinglet.
Seems I’ve seen ruby-crowneds every two or three days for a two or three weeks. They’re moving through. They’re quiet at this time of year—they’re a fountain of song in spring—and they seem to like to poke around the remnant leaves for little bugs and spiders. Also, the flutter often. I’d love to get a photo of one fluttering.
Today, it being a gray day, I just got a couple photos of a kinglet perching. Although they never perch for long.
Kinglets, moving through.
