Good Day

Tuesday, January 4th, 2022
Common Redpolls, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 04 January 2022.
Common Redpolls.

A warmish—high-30s (F)—overcast morning, last one before a stretch of precipitation (or so they say). Didn’t know what to expect to find up the switchback. Turned out to be a good day.

Along with the usual winter birds, I heard the solitaire again, then spied three soaring eagles, then heard (and saw) more robins, then encountered more deer than yesterday, and finally just stood on the trail and watched as a nice-sized flock of redpolls showed up.

Seems my redpoll reports are appearing in eBird as rare sightings. Today, I saw more than ever. Certainly a nice little irruption of the species this winter this year.

Depending on the weather, I might end my two-plus-year hiking streak tomorrow. We shall see, dog and I.

Winter Robin

Monday, January 3rd, 2022
American Robin, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 03 January 2022.
American Robin.

A warmer morning—low-20s (F)—no breeze to speak of, brilliant skies. A few more bird species than in recent days, including a bunch of juncos and a random, solitary robin. The robin, a fleeting sighting, stands as the most memorable.

Still, the deer were nice, too (including a handsome buck), and one brave cottontail in the little old Monarch Quarry.

Precipitation coming the next few days. Or so they say.

I <3 Chickadees

Sunday, January 2nd, 2022
The morning pigeons, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 02 January 2022.
The morning pigeons.

About 14° (F) this morning when dog and I hit the trail—a couple degrees warmer than yesterday. Fewer clouds, though, so most of the hike was sun-warmed. Encountered deer and cottontails, as usual lately. Few bird species, though.

Most animated were a couple gangs of chickadees. I do ?? chickadees.
